Bellefontaine Elementary School hosted Farm Day on Thursday.

Kindergartners and first-graders enjoyed a fun and informational presentation from Bellefontaine farmer Caleb Wilson.

Wilson’s family farms 4,600 acres of corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa in Logan, Hardin, and Auglaize counties.

Wilson told students how these crops are used, such as corn in gasoline and soybeans in food.

He drove a 500-horsepower Fendt tractor into the bus parking lot.

360 students got a chance to see the massive, 8-wheel tractor.

Caleb also brought containers of corn, soybeans, barley, and wheat for students to see.

BES Assistant Principal Denise Johnson wrote a grant titled “Little Farmers, Big Ideas” to fund Farm Day.

Earlier this semester, students learned through a simulated farmers market in classrooms.

The students sold pretend fruit items and earned pretend money.

They also used a cash register for each transaction.

Johnson said, “The goals are for kids to imagine they’re business owners making creative choices, then presenting their products to customers.”

She added, “We want each student to see how agriculture impacts their daily life.”

Bellefontaine Elementary School will host Farm Day for second-graders on April 26th.
